  1. Which is your favorite portrait photo that you took? Why? My favorite picture is the half lighting, featuring Sam Goodbody. Sam just looks fantastic, as half his face is showing, but still looks dazzling. Personally, my favorite type of lighting is the half lighting because it shows half a face which looks very menacing and mysterious.
  2. Which of these lighting techniques do you think you can apply for future picture taking? Explain. The lighting technique I would apply for the future is Rembrandt because I like the way it shines on the person. It has enough shade and light for the person to be at their peak.

What tips/advice would you give another photographer about shooting motion? Tips I would give to another photographer about shooting motion is too try and tell the model to do something while moving. An activity could be shooting a ball, running, or just jumping in the air. Keep on shooting until you get a result that you like.

What do you hope your composite image communicates to the viewer? What statement is your piece making about culture today? I hope my composite image communicates the difference in textures to the viewer. The pictures I combined are a picture of Pablo Picasso’s and a picture of Canadian rapper, Drake. The textures and the type of styles are very different which makes the picture composite. The reason I chose the Picasso picture is because he is a very well-known artist and I liked the picture because it was a man playing music on the guitar. Secondly, I chose the picture of Drake because I like his music and he made a song called “Drew a Picasso.”

What advice would you give to a person looking to create a composite image in Photoshop? Advice I would give to a person looking to create a composite image is to have fun with using different textures and colors. I would also tell them to be creative with it because this project will be full of creativity and gives you freedom to choose what you want to do. Look for old paintings which interest you and that could work well with the picture. In summary, be creative with your composite image and use your imagination on this project.

What is the distinct mood of the photograph? The distinct mood of my refraction photograph gives off a mood of calmness and beauty. The colors of the skyline are blue, light gray, and a very light pink. These colors are easy on the eyes and view of the skyline is just a beautiful view of New York City. The different heights of the buildings compliment each other really well adding depth to the photo.

What does the photo make you think about? The photo of the skyline makes me think about the city and the views you get while walking around New York. The tall buildings, the taxis, Central Park, traffic, and the bright lights of New York are all something I think about when I see the picture of the skyline. I went to a concert this Saturday in Brooklyn, and I walked through the city, looked at the tall buildings, and all the lights of the big city which is the best part of New York.

What in the photo jumps out at you? Something that jumps out at me in my refraction picture is the different heights of the building. The heights of the building is interesting because I like the differences and completes the photo very well. If it were to be all symmetric, I think it wouldn’t be as good.

How does the photo make you feel? The photo makes me feel at peace and calm. The skyline, or the sky in general, is a very soothing thing to look at and think about. The city makes me feel at home, because I enjoy going to the city for basketball games or concerts.

What advice would you give to next year’s students for shooting abstract photography? Advice I would give to next year’s students shooting abstract photography is to not be boring and switch things up every once in a while. Try a different lens, a different angle, a different object, or focus. Take as many pictures as possible because you never know which pictures will be good, and you could just delete it after.

Q1. How did you choose the specific types of food for each portrait? What is their significance? Explain – be specific! (3 sentences min.) I chose the following foods because they were the easiest available to me and my models. Their significance in the picture is that they make the photo more complete and adds a touch of detail. For Nolan’s picture, we used the pretzel stick as a “cigar” to look like he is smoking and looking into the distance. For Maren’s picture, the ice cream was already on the table so she decided to have it while I was photographing her.

Q2. Consider the lighting in your photographs. What was the light source in each of your photos. What time of day? How did it affect the mood and atmosphere of the portraits? Explain – be specific!  (3 sentences min.) The light source in Maren’s picture were the kitchen lights that were dangling over the peninsula. The time of day during the shot was at night at approximately 9pm. In Nolan’s shot, the lighting came from the sun which was slightly covered by the clouds. The time of day this shot was taken was in the early morning.

Q3. Think about the composition of your photos. Name the composition technique you used for each photo. Why did you choose to crop your photos as shown? Be specific! (3 sentences min.) The composition technique I used for Nolan’s shot was either FILL THE FRAME or RULE OF THIRDS. I chose to crop this picture as shown because I liked the space the his head took up and I wanted extra space in front of him because he was looking towards the distance. The composition technique I used for Maren’s picture was RULE OF THIRDS. I chose to crop the picture like this because I only wanted to show the important pieces of the shot and not include any unnecessary background details that would distract the viewer from the main piece.

Q4. How do the colors and color splash technique in your photographs contribute to the overall impact of the images? Why did you choose to mask the specific areas in color for each photo? Be specific!  (3 sentences min.) The colors and the color splash technique contribute to the impact of the images. For Nolan’s picture, I chose to color splash the pretzel, his sweater, and the fence. I chose to mask these areas in color because I wanted the pretzel to be a focal point in the picture, for NJ’s sweater, I just wanted some extra color to not make the picture look bland. Finally, I colored in the fence because I liked the bright color the fence gave to the picture to add some pop. For Maren’s picture, I chose to color in the peninsula, including the ice cream, and the wall behind her. I chose to color in the table because it was the focal point of the shot and it added bright colors. Lastly, I colored the wall because it added more color and made the picture look more complete.

Q5. Consider the technical aspects of your photography, such as focus (lens size 75-300(lg) or 18-35(reg), or iphone mode/focus), depth of field (blurry background), and exposure (value in PS adjustment of your black, grays, whites). How did you use these techniques to enhance your images? Be specific! (3 sentences min.) For Nolan’s shot, I used a close lens because I wanted to make sure the pretzel was large enough to be seen. I used a blurry background for the shot as well so the main focus was the pretzel stick. For Maren’s picture, I used my iPhone 11’s 0.5 camera to encompass all of the details. But, I did not fully zoom out to be distracted from the ice cream.

Q6. What advice would you give to next year’s students for shooting food portraits? Be specific! (3 sentences min.) The advice I would give to next year’s students would be to focus on the directions Mrs. Otterbein gives you before you start shooting. In addition, I would like to share that the composition techniques will help you when taking pictures, especially with food which can sometimes be an interesting subject to shoot. Next, I would try and be creative as possible with this as food can be full of experimenting and creativity. Using food in expressive ways and using different angles lenses can change a photo for the better.

1. What strengths and weaknesses do you see in your own work? I see many strengths and weaknesses in my own work but I think I can still improve on my skills. Some strengths I see in my work is that I took many pictures while the object was in motion and taking simple pictures and making them look nice by using different angles. Some weaknesses in my work consist of not utilizing unique angles and some pictures may not be the clearest and best quality.

2. How might you improve or refine your approach in future photography projects? I can improve and refine my approach using the camera in future projects. I could improve my approach by finding different distances and using different lenses to see what a shot would like from closer or farther away. Also, maybe I could position the object I am shooting better to make it stand out more.

3. Pick one of your photos, what emotions or messages did you intend to convey through this photograph? In my value picture, it had Anthony Costa and Kevin Geiger walking across the field. I told them to pose for the camera while walking and I took the shot. The emotions and messages I intended in this shot were supposed to be fun and happy.

4. Are there specific elements of art you would like to explore further in your photography? I would like to explore value more. Value seems like an interesting element because it makes the whole picture a neutral color. I like the black and white aspect of pictures because it makes everything look cleaner and it is not so much on the eyes which makes it calm.

5. What concepts or techniques do you want to experiment with in your next project? I would like to implement more close-up shots as it captures more detail. Also, taking long shots are interesting as it gets a lot of your surroundings and encompasses more color if you want more color. Lastly, I would like to use different lenses and different distances with the cameras.

What did you enjoy the most about this first photography project?

I enjoyed spending time with my partner and learning new things about this camera. I liked looking at the different types of nature and objects in our world and capturing them onto the camera. Also, I have never used a camera like this so I found this experience very fun and enjoyable.

What was the biggest challenge for you photographing with a DSLR camera?

My biggest challenge photographing with a DSLR camera was that sometimes it wouldn’t focus very quickly so you would have to move back. In addition, I have never used a camera like the DSLR camera before and I thought it was quite difficult to try for the first time but I eventually got the hang of it. Overall, using this camera was a good experience for me trying out different things in photography.

What will you do differently next photo shoot?

Next photo shoot, I will use angles much differently. If you look at things from a different perspective, you might get a better result out of your picture. Also, I will try to use height and depth on the camera to get more shots that would look more interesting than a plain shot.
